September Holidays, National Days & Observances

September stands at the doorway between summer and fall, bringing Labor Day, back-to-school traditions, Patriot Day, Constitution Day, wildlife celebrations, international observances and the first cozy hints of autumn. From books and wilderness to pizza, coffee and cider, there is something worth celebrating all month long.

Holiday Helper note: Some observances are official holidays, while others are cultural, religious, awareness-based or unofficial fun days. Dates for movable observances can change from year to year.

Major September Holidays & Observances

First Monday: Labor Day is a U.S. federal holiday honoring the contributions and achievements of American workers.

September 8: International Literacy Day highlights the importance of literacy around the world.

September 11: Patriot Day commemorates the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

September 17: Constitution Day and Citizenship Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution and recognizes U.S. citizenship.

September Observances That Move

Several important September celebrations follow weekday, astronomical or religious calendars rather than a permanent numbered date.

  • Labor Day: first Monday in September in the United States.
  • September equinox: generally September 22 or 23, depending on the year and time zone.
  • World Maritime Day: observed on the last Thursday of September.
  • Rosh Hashanah: changes annually according to the Hebrew calendar and may fall in September or October.
  • Yom Kippur: changes annually according to the Hebrew calendar and may fall in September or October.
  • Islamic and Hindu observances: move through the Gregorian calendar according to their respective calendars.

Looking ahead: In 2027, Labor Day falls on September 6. Because movable observances change from year to year, always check the current year's calendar when planning a celebration or event.

More Ways to Celebrate September

September is a beautiful month for enjoying the shift from summer into fall. Take a walk in the wilderness, visit a local park, admire the architecture in your town or city, curl up with a good book or spend an afternoon outside noticing the first seasonal changes.

The month's observances also offer plenty of opportunities to learn and connect. Read together for International Literacy Day, explore American history around Constitution Day, do something kind for a neighbor, talk about peace with children or turn Talk Like a Pirate Day into an afternoon of wonderfully silly family fun.

And then there are the flavors of September. Celebrate with pizza, pancakes, apple dumplings, pot pie, guacamole, chocolate milk or a favorite coffee drink. As the evenings begin to cool, a mug of hot mulled cider is a fitting way to welcome the first cozy days of autumn.
